Bell Mobility launches Netgear Turbo Hub, sends juicy HSPA+ to your WiFi and Ethernet gear

Canada's Bell appears to be taking advantage of Netgear's partnership with Ericsson on this one, putting its 21Mbps HSPA+ network to good use. Not to say that phones aren't a great use for high-speed data, of course, but that's enough bandwidth to realistically replace a home internet connection or two -- and that's exactly what the so-called MBR 1210 Turbo Hub sets out to do, spreading an incoming Bell data signal over up to 15 devices connected via WiFi and Ethernet. Interestingly, it also allows users to use the HSPA+ hookup as an automatic fallback in case your primary connection (say, DSL or cable) fails -- perfect for us "blog or die" types. You'll pay CAD $149.95 (about $147) on a two-year deal to put a Turbo Hub on your shelf, or CAD $299.95 ($294) sans contract; plans, meanwhile, range from CAD $35 to $60 ($34 to $59) for between 3GB and 10GB of data (no metric / English conversion necessary there) with a $10 surcharge to gain access to the 21Mbps signal -- you get 7.2Mbps otherwise. It's a pretty creative plan structure, and we're sure folks would appreciate an unlimited option... preferably without any extra speed fees. Follow the break for the full press release.Continue reading Bell Mobility launches Netgear Turbo Hub, sends juicy HSPA+ to your WiFi and Ethernet gearBell Mobility launches Netgear Turbo Hub, sends juicy HSPA+ to your WiFi and Ethernet gear originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 30 Nov 2010 16:58:00 EDT. HTC Merge accessories in the wild -- nope, still not official yet

Here's what we know about the HTC Merge: it's also been known as the Lexicon, it's a dual-mode phone with GSM and CDMA heading to Verizon, it's got a slide-out QWERTY, an 800MHz processor, Bing and Bing Maps (a popular trend these days), and now we know, too, that it has a Body Glove snap on cover available to protect its metallic exterior. Here's what we don't know: why no one's yet to officially acknowledged this phone.HTC Merge accessories in the wild -- nope, still not official yet originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 29 Nov 2010 17:32:00 EDT. Sony aims for half of Japan's e-reader market by 2012

Given the dominance of Sony's Walkman over in the Land of the Rising Sun, it's a little surprising to think that Sony has been all but silent regarding the Japanese e-reader market. We heard back in May that the mega-corp was planning an e-reader launch in Japan by the year's end, aiming to build out an elaborate e-book distribution platform with local telecom operator KDDI. Fast forward a few months, and it seems as if thing's are finally falling into place. New reports are suggesting that the 5- and 6-inch Sony Reader devices will be on sale in Japan on December 10th, with pricing set for ¥20,000 ($237) / ¥25,000 ($297), respectively. Additionally, it's planning to crack the seal on an online e-bookstore with around 20,000 titles, and that one should be ready to roll prior to the "year-end shopping rush." Perhaps more stunning, however, is Sony's intentions to "sell 300,000 Readers in the first year and win half the domestic market by 2012" -- that's according to Sony Marketing Japan president Nobuki Kurita. Bold words, Sony, but we love the ambition.Sony aims for half of Japan's e-reader market by 2012 originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 28 Nov 2010 04:04:00 EDT. Nokia X7-00 spotted feeding its Need for Speed in the wild (video)

Firstly, let's be absolutely clear that we don't know this is Nokia's X7, but given the polished, entertainment-centric design (it has four speakers, apparently), we're inclined to believe that it's the real deal. Its screen looks to be the same 4-inch affair as on Nokia's E7, it's running the latest Symbian OS (formerly known as Symbian^3), and pictures of its rear reveal an 8 megapixel camera. The last detail of import, naturally, is the reassurance that comes from knowing that this supposed X7 can crunch through Need for Speed quite nicely. Jump past the break to see it on video.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Update: The video's been thrown into private mode pretty quickly. Let us know if you find any copies of it floating about the interwebs.

Update 2: Thanks to the lightning-fast gang at Mobile Bulgaria, we've got a new copy of the video up past the break. We've also spotted that this handset has four homescreens rather than the three available on currently released Symbian handsets. A newer version of the software? Might well be.Continue reading Nokia X7-00 spotted feeding its Need for Speed in the wild (video)Nokia X7-00 spotted feeding its Need for Speed in the wild (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 26 Nov 2010 08:41:00 EDT. Advent Vega nabs Android Market access courtesy of MoDaCo custom ROM

The Advent Vega seems to be gaining some serious traction overseas, but despite the low price, not having access to Google's bona fide Android Market is a huge Debbie Downer. Well, it was. The fine folks over at MoDaCo have cooked up a custom ROM for the 10-inch tablet, and if you've nothing better to do on a Black Friday than tinker with software, the v1.04 build hosted in the source link promises a "full Google experience" including Gmail, Maps with Street View, Talk, Voice Search and even Android Market access. Diaspora Alpha hands-on: a video review of Facebook's competition

So, Diaspora started sending out invites. Jay got one and invited me in! Rather than bore you with a lengthy text description, I've decided to bore you with a video instead, so you can at least see for yourself what it looks like while I rattle on and on.

AutoCorrect for English harnesses the power of AutoHotkey for typo-free text

There are certain words in English that are very easy to get wrong, like aggravate, exaggerate, and acquainted (as you see in the screenshot). AutoCorrect for English (ACE) is a fantastic script for correcting exactly those type of mistakes, and it does so seamlessly, quickly, and across your entire system.
ACE is very easy to overlook it, because it hasn't been updated since 2007, it doesn't have its own Web page, and it's just a lowly script (not even an application). However, if you do any sort of writing, you really owe it to yourself to try it out.
The script corrects about 4,700 common misspellings (including the word "mispelling") based on lists from Wikipedia, MS Word, and other sources. Correction is very fast - it is done via AutoHotkey's "hotstring" mechanism, which means that it often happens before you even notice you've made a mistake.
Adding new words is easy: simply highlight the word you've just misspelled and hit Win+H. A small window will pop up that shows the word and asks for the correct spelling. Once you enter the correct spelling and hit OK, that's it - you will never make that typo again.
The script is lightweight, free, fast, and easily configurable. What more could you want?Filed under: Text, WindowsAutoCorrect for English harnesses the power of AutoHotkey for typo-free text originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 12 Nov 2010 17:30:00 EST. Facebook for iOS gets privacy settings

Users of the Facebook app for iOS can now access their privacy settings without firing up Safari. Following the update to version 3.2, you can tap the account button on the app's main screen to jump to Facebook's controls. The update also adds two-tap access to your Facebook profile settings and the Help Center -- also via the Web. As AppAdvice points out, native controls would have been a nicer addition, but at least the screens can be accessed without leaving the app now.

HDHomeRun Prime CableCARD tri-tuner comes one step closer to reality

Originally announced at CES in January, Silicon Dust's entrance into the encrypted cable TV tuner market just reached an important milestone on its way to market: CableLabs Certification -- anytime CableLabs is involved things take longer than anyone expects. The price of the three tuner HDHomeRun Prime is still set at $249, but the hope of being released by the "holidays" seems lost (Thanksgiving counts as one of those days right?). Said product is expected to start production in the next few weeks, after which you'll be able to pre-order the elusive tuner from major retailers. The big question of course is with the Ceton InfiniTV 4 still on a three month backorder, and selling on eBay for over twice its retail price, which should you order? We suggest you pre-order both just to be safe; worst case you end up on the good side of a crazy eBay auction.HDHomeRun Prime CableCARD tri-tuner comes one step closer to reality originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 25 Nov 2010 12:43:00 EDT. Nintendo won't be exhibiting at CES 2011 after all, will conduct meetings behind closed doors

Wait, put the cork back in the champagne, Nintendo isn't making its triumphant return to CES after all. The Consumer Electronics Association has just blasted out a new press release, presumably with a face red with embarrassment, to correct its erroneous note that Nintendo will be an exhibitor at the 2011 tech showcase. As it turns out, Satoru Iwata's crew have booked some meeting rooms during the show -- to discuss what, we don't know -- which somewhere along the line was misinterpreted to mean that the company will be exhibiting its wares. It won't. We'll be there anyway, this just means we'll have to be a little craftier about extracting our information.

Sony working on same-screen 3D multiplayer, holographics for PS3?

Don't go knockin' Sony for resting on its laurels. The company that has spearheaded the 3D gaming push (NVIDIA notwithstanding) is apparently not even close to finished, with SCEE studio director Mick Hocking taking the time to get our juices flowing in an interview with Develop. The full spill is quite lengthy, and definitely a solid read for those interested, but a few key nuggets jumped out at us. For starters, Mike confessed that Sony has "techniques like holographics for the PS3 that [he thinks] will be very interesting for the future 3D games," and continued with this: "In regards to that we have some new technology that we've shown to developers that uses 3D techniques, it allows two players to play full screen multi-player games but without each being able to see the others view, and they have been massively keen on them." Of course, such a technique isn't exactly new -- we saw prototypes of the sort in use back at GDC -- but bringing them to a market as vast as the PS3 owner pool would definitely be a monumental step. Now, if you'll excuse us, we've got a Gran Turismo 5 disc laying here that needs our undivided attention for the time being.. .Sony working on same-screen 3D multiplayer, holographics for PS3? originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 24 Nov 2010 13:41:00 EDT. The Daily: Murdoch's iPad newspaper is like 'The New York Post Goes to College'

We don't usually find our latest tech news in Women's Wear Daily yet the publication seems to have scooped Rupert Murdoch's plans for a tablet-only newspaper called The Daily -- news now seemingly confirmed by the New York Times. Scheduled for release early next year, The Daily is expected to cost 99 cents per week (about $4.25 per month) for an electronic paper published seven days a week by a 100-member strong newsroom staffed with "twentysomething" talent led by a former managing editor from the New York Post. According to the sources speaking to WWD, It'll be written with the "sensibilities" of a tabloid and the intelligence of a broadsheet focusing on national news. In other words, it's said to be like "The New York Post Goes to College." A beta is expected by Christmas before hitting the iPad "and other tablet devices" sometime in early 2011.The Daily: Murdoch's iPad newspaper is like 'The New York Post Goes to College' originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 22 Nov 2010 04:40:00 EDT. Gmail Call Recording Appears To Be Rolling Out Widely

Back in August, Gmail launched what is perhaps my favorite new feature ever: integration with Google Voice, which lets you make and receive calls directly from your computer.

Earlier this month, there were some initial reports that Google had improved on this feature with a nifty addition: the ability to record inbound Google Voice calls directly from Gmail. Now it looks like Google is rolling out the feature more broadly ? we've polled a few people and they're all seeing it, and there are plenty of reports on Twitter of people noticing it for the first time.ipad android wire

Yahoo outs Messenger 11 beta with loads of new features

Yahoo! Messenger remains one of the most popular desktop IM clients around, and its users are now able to get a taste of what's coming in version 11. Like its biggest competition -- Windows Live Messenger -- Y! Messenger 11 is about creating a more current, social messaging app.

One of the biggest additions is Facebook chat support -- which works nicely, though former Squadder Brad Linder noted that Meebo thought I was offline. Twitter support has been added, and Messenger 11 also offers write-once-post-everywhere updates to Facebook, Twitter, and Yahoo! Pulse. More social gaming options have been added, and will soon include Zynga's Mafia Wars and Fishville. Yahoo! Messenger 11 also allows multiple sign-ins, so you won't get disconnected from your desktop if you sign in on your mobile device. Windows 7 users can change status, send messages, and sign in and out via Messenger 11's jump list.

In his announcement, Yahoo's John Dunning also has some good news for Android users. Yahoo! Messenger for Android will be updated soon with better video chat support. Currently, only users with an EVO or MyTouch 4G can utilize the feature, but additional handset support is on the way.

First Look At The Jolibook: Cloudy With A Chance Of Lightning Speed (Video)

France-based Jolicloud's Jolibook will reportedly hit the (UK) market starting today at a 279 price point (roughly $380). I'm one of the first to have received a review unit, which runs the all-new version of the company's eponymous Linux-based cloud OS, Jolicloud 1.1.

I'm not much of a hardware reviewer, unlike the CrunchGear team, but fortunately there isn't all that much to review when it comes to the hardware. All in all, it's a pretty standard package for a small-sized computer at a fairly steep price considering it doesn't include Windows, which many, far cheaper netbooks with the same configuration do.

Still, Jolicloud 1.1 is the reason I'd recommend some people - not everyone, and mainly people who travel a lot and have made the switch to Web-based applications for most of their work-related or personal activities already - to purchase a Jolibook, over any netbook that comes with Windows in that - rumored - price range.bike keyboard facebook

$399 iPads, fondue sets appearing at TJ Maxx locations across the country

Sure, we know where you guys go when you're near a strip mall and have to pick up an irregularly sized Tommy Hilfiger shirt, or when you run out of Paco Rabanne cologne before a hot date, but we definitely did a double take when our tipster Aaron sent us these pics he took of a 16GB WiFi iPad that he found at a TJ Maxx in Vernon, NY -- and not just because they're going for a relatively reasonable $399. We made a couple phone calls and found some at stores in Ohio and New Jersey (including one who said they were holding their stock back for Black Friday) while we struck out in other parts of the country. Still, if you're looking to drop cash on one of these guys, we'd make a quick call to your local outlet before heading to the Apple Store. And when you're done, don't forget to swing by Half Price Books and pick up a remaindered copy of A Bold Fresh Piece of Humanity by Bill O'Reilly. Get a closer look after the break.

AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon announce Isis national mobile commerce network

Just in time for the total economic collapse of Europe and the rise of the cyber-nomadic tribes, the kids at Discover, Barclaycard, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon have a name for their mobile phone-based payment system: Isis. Essentially it remains what we heard from Bloomberg a few months back: a system for using an app on your phone to send payments to a POS system using NFC technology. The Isis team thinks it has "the scope and scale necessary to introduce mobile commerce on a broad basis," and we wish them the best. But we know how it all ends anyways: with the lucky among us dead, and the rest of us living in caves, hiding from death-dealing robots, and bartering for what we can't scrounge from the ruins of our once-great cities. VLC 1.1.5 adds live WebM streaming support, Game Music Emu, Channels.com shows

Popular do-it-all media player VLC has updated to version 1.1.5, and there are a handful of noteworthy changes nestled amongst the bugfixes and security patches. For starters, VLC can now play live streaming video wrapped in Google's WebM video container.

The second big addition can be found on VLC's playlist window. Click the arrow next to Internet in the Media Browser box, and you'll notice Channels.com has been added to the mix. While you won't be able to access the entire vast expanse of shows Channels.com offers, VLC does include more than 1,000 popular offerings.

VLC 1.1.5 also brings one seriously awesome new feature for classic gaming fans: it can now play back a variety of video game audio using the Game Music Emu engine. Yes, you can now play your favorite in-game music from Atari, Famicom, and Sega right alongside your MP3 collection.

Scientists put color on your bling with micro carvings, gangsters pacified

Remember that time when you sipped some herbal tea and thought, "I really want a pink gold ring?" Yeah, that was some good tea alright, but the brainiacs at the University of Southampton have actually found a way to achieve this potential fashion trendsetter. The idea is simple: rather than coating metals -- especially naturally colored ones like gold and copper -- with paint, these folks alter their color by using an ion beam to carve fine patterns that are smaller than visible light's wavelength. The resultant metamaterial dramatically boosts the metals' light absorption efficiency, thus reflecting a different color depending on the pattern's radius and etch depth. So for instance, gold can reflect colors ranging from orange to red to green to brown with its ring pattern etch depth ranging from 85nm to 205nm, respectively. See? We told you it's simple, but there's also some visual aid after the break to wrap up this science lesson.Continue reading Scientists put color on your bling with micro carvings, gangsters pacifiedScientists put color on your bling with micro carvings, gangsters pacified originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 14 Nov 2010 09:37:00 EDT. 10+ handy Opera 11 extensions

Opera 11 has finally joined the likes of Firefox, Chrome, and Safari in offering easy extensibility via extensions. While the list of available Opera extensions is comparatively short at the moment, there are already more than 100 to choose from -- and several that are quite handy.

You'll need Opera 11 installed to use these, of course. Grab a current snapshot build, as a number of extension-related issues have been fixed since the initial Opera 11 preview.

Now without further ado, let's jump in!

Translate (pictured)
A good number of extensions aim to add functionality from other browsers -- like Google Chrome's auto-translate feature. Translate (unsurprisingly) brings that functionality to Opera 11. Visit a page in a language other than your default (which you can set via a drop-down) and a toolbar offering to translate it appears.
Documents Preview

Want to open supported files using Google's Web-based viewer instead of downloading them to your machine? Install Documents Preview, and .DOC, .PDF, and .PPT files will open right inside Opera 11.

Image Preview

Regardless of which browser I'm using, I like to have an extension installed that displays larger versions of image thumbnails when I hover over them. For Opera 11, image preview is the way to go.

In keeping with the easy-to-understand naming employed by the previous three extensions, Weather Forecast brings you up-to-the-minute info right in your toolbar. The drop-down provides the short-range forecast, shows sunrise and sunset times, and allows you to switch between multiple cities.

Snap Links

A favorite extension for Firefox, Snap Links for Opera offers the same functionality: click and drag a selection box around a group of links, and Opera will open them all in background tabs.

NoAds

It seems like whenever we write up some Opera news, there's always one commenter saying "until there's AdBlock for Opera, I'd never consider switching." In truth, Opera has a pretty excellent way to block ads out-of-the-box, but now there's an actual extension for those who want it.

NotScripts

The second part of the powerfully geeky one-two browser extension punch, NotScripts brings (you guessed it!) NoScript's functionality to Opera 11. This one's also available as a Chrome extension from the same developer, which we've got to think means it's a fairly trivial task to port an extension from Chrome to Opera.

To-Read Sites

Services like Read it Later are a popular way to maintain a queue of items you just don't have time to dive into right now. To-Read Sites is an in-browser option -- no registration or log-in required.

Opera-to-Phone

Push-to-device extensions are all the rage -- Android users who browse with Opera on their desktop will want to pick up OTP. Unless, of course, you're already rocking the Opera Mobile for Android beta and using Link (sync).

Mini Wolfram Alpha

All the geeky computational goodness of Wolfram Alpha without having to leave your current tab.

Taskboard

This extension loads the extremely slick, HTML5-powered 10K Apart app in a handy drop-down menu. It's a great way to keep a list of things you need to do close at hand.

Redirect to HTTPS

Blah blah Firesheep blah blah SSL. But seriously... It's a good idea to browse certain sites like Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, and the like via HTTPS whenever possible. Adding this extension to Opera 11 will redirect you on supported sites -- hopefully the developer will allow us to add our own sites in a future release.

Stumbleupon

For those who enjoy random discoveries, StumbleUpon has already released an official extension for Opera 11. It's the same great Web-based meandering experience it's always been on other browsers.

Facebook Mail and Office Web Apps combo to go head-to-head with Google?

Things are relatively quiet this morning in the blogosphere, with the except of rumblings about Facebook possibly launching their own webmail app to compete with the likes of Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail, and Gmail. In reality, it's probably not so much about competition as it is with getting Facebook users to spend as much time on the site as possible -- adding to Facebook's glut of delicious, highly-targetable-by-advertisers data.

Like any good, up-to-date, Web-based email, Facebook's offering is said to offer integrated document editing and viewing, courtesy Microsoft's Office Web Apps (OWA). When Docs.com launched in beta, of course, the only way to get in on the action was to sign up via Facebook. It certainly stands to reason, then, that Facebook's rumored webmail app would feature tight integration with OWA. ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley cites a Facebook source as saying "The Office Team has been working on this for quite a while now."

We'll keep you posted as events unfold, but if the invite-only launch of Facebook Mail does happen today you'll have to be living under a rock to avoid hearing about it.Facebook Mail and Office Web Apps combo to go head-to-head with Google? originally appeared on Download Squad on Fri, 12 Nov 2010 09:30:00 EST. Tt eSports' new Azurues gaming mouse has FPS players in its sights

Taiwanese peripheral manufacturer Tt eSports has launched a new three button gaming mouse aimed to please those with a penchant for fragging. Unlike other options out there such as the Razer Lachesis, which tout ever-increasing sensitivity specs, the Azurues' optical sensor engine is content to top out at 1600 dpi, and can easily be adjusted down to 400 / 800 dpi via a hardware switch on the bottom. That makes it ideal for those who prefer a little more wrist leeway while shooting. Other niceties include a black rubber coating for grip, an adjustable weight design, low friction Teflon feet, integrated lighting, and a braided cable to take repeated abuse from the thrill of desk-side battle. Unfortunately, pricing and availability are still unknown, so there's no need to remove your cursor from the back of your next victim's head until more details surface.Continue reading Tt eSports' new Azurues gaming mouse has FPS players in its sightsTt eSports' new Azurues gaming mouse has FPS players in its sights originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 13 Nov 2010 05:27:00 EDT. Pud Revisits His Past, Launches An Email Newsletter Platform With TinyLetter

Email newsletters may be ready for a comeback. The fact is that despite the communications mechanism being old-school, publishers can put in less effort to get more views in an inbox than on a blog. AOL exec Bob Pittman has bet big on email newsletters, funding a number of media startups built around the form of communication. Philip Kaplan (a.k.a. Pud), the founder of FuckedCompany, AdBrite and Blippy, has created his own email newsletter platform called TinyLetter.

TinyLetter is a dead simple way to create email newsletters. You pick out a name for your newsletter, and TinyLetter will create a URL to send to contacts via email, Facebook, Twitter and more so they can sign-up. You can then write your newsletter, customize your newsletters by design, add subscribers, read replies from subscribers and track old newsletters. You can also turn on the option to charge per month for your newsletter.blog twitter social

Dell confirms protected WiFi problems, mislabeled batteries on the three Venue Pros sold so far

If you detected a hint of anger in our headline, please forgive us, but we're sure many of you are going through the same rollercoaster of emotions -- after all, Dell's lovely portrait QWERTY Venue Pro has only been sold in ridiculously limited quantities through Microsoft's seven retail stores so far, making them virtually impossible to buy for most of us. Anyhow, in the event you were lucky enough to get one, you'll be pleased to know that Dell is aware of the problems you might be having connecting to secure WiFi networks, and the next batch won't be afflicted -- which might explain why they haven't offered a steady stream of devices through the stores this week. They also mention it's a "software glitch," but there's no mention of timing on an update for phones in the field.

There's also been a problem with batteries on these inaugural devices being labeled as "engineering samples," apparently, but Dell assures that they're production-quality cells that have simply been mislabeled. They say that customers wanting an exchange either for the WiFi issue or the mislabeled battery can get one at their local store "beginning at the end of next week," so we'd take that to mean there won't be any stock filtering in for anyone until then. Patience continues to be a virtue we don't believe in.Dell confirms protected WiFi problems, mislabeled batteries on the three Venue Pros sold so far originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 11 Nov 2010 13:04:00 EDT. Samsung NX 100 gets reviewed, deemed a good option for the CSC curious

We've shared exclusives of Samsung's NX100 in the wild, gone hands on and even completed a quick and dirty mini review at Photokina this year, and for the most part walked away impressed by its i-Function lens controls and wallet-friendly price. Now, the folks at Photography Blog have shared their own exhaustive review of the mirror-less camera and recommend the NX10's little brother as a good option with a high-quality APS-C sensor for those looking to dip their toes in the Compact System Camera waters. However they were less enthused about the NX100's i-Function controls than we were, feeling the concept would work better on units with electronic viewfinders (which they missed on the NX100) -- since they can be held close to the eye as opposed to at arm's length. The lack of a built-in pop-up flash, and optical or in-body stabilisation was also a disappointment. Benefits like a good Smart Auto scene selection system, competitive focusing speed, and an impressive AMOLED 3-inch screen were mentioned as redeeming high points though, which combined with rock-bottom pricing, put the camera in a unique competition-undercutting position. For more juicy details, be sure to hit up the review link below.Samsung NX 100 gets reviewed, deemed a good option for the CSC curious originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 11 Nov 2010 12:21:00 EDT. Firefox 4.0 beta 7 brings faster JavaScript, WebGL, is now feature-complete

A new beta release of Firefox 4 has finally been made available. What was the hold-up, you ask? Well, with Firefox 4.0 beta 7 being tagged as the feature freeze, Mozilla had to make sure that everything they planned on being built-in by default was ready for prime-time testing. And since there's no shortage of new features and improvements in Firefox 4, it stands to reason that beta 7 took a little while to get here.

What's new in Firefox 4 beta 7? Taking center stage is the kicked up duo of TraceMonkey and JägerMonkey, which have combined to make JavaScript handling every bit as fast in Firefox 4 as it is in Google Chrome. Hardware acceleration has also been turned on by default, bringing faster page rendering via your GPU -- whether you're running WIndows XP, OS X, or Windows 7.

There's also better HTML5 support, WebGL for 3D awesomeness, and Firefox 4 beta 7 can now utilize OpenType fonts on Web pages. You're looking at the final version of Firefox 4, really. Since no new features will be added from this point forward, it's all about squashing bugs and preventing crashes between now and launch day.

We'll have more Firefox 4 coverage throughout the day, so stay tuned!

Can WinPho 7 Close the App Gap?

Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 is in the wild, and one of the big questions about the launch involves the app ecosystem for the new mobile operating system. Microsoft promised about 1,000 apps on launch day, and it appears the company has managed to cover most of the bases for big-name apps, with offerings such as Facebook, Twitter, Netflix, YouTube, Shazam, Yelp, Foursquare, Seesmic, The Weather Channel and others.follower blog twitter

FaceIt-3GS brings FaceTime to your jailbroken 3GS

Ah, the beautiful, ever-useful jailbreak and the developers that make it worthwhile. It's already unlocked the magic of FaceTime over 3G, and now it's making FaceTime capable with any old iPhone 3GS handset (thanks to the iPhoneIslam Team, who did the heavy lifting). Of course, lacking a front facing camera, the resulting video chat might be a little short on faces, but the functionality certainly isn't hurting anybody. Right, Apple? Hit up the app on Cydia and start streaming to your heart's content, and if you're wary there's a demo video after the break.

Nokia taking over Symbian development, Foundation responsible for licensing

So it seems the Symbian Foundation isn't necessarily going away, but it's transitioning its role in a big, big way. They're undertaking a "strategic change" that will involve the Foundation moving to a new role where it controls the product's patent portfolio and licenses the Symbian brand and its research and development activities, but the meat of the operation -- the actual platform development -- will move over to Nokia beginning the end of March next year. For its part, Nokia says that it's still "strongly committed" to the platform, it just won't be the Foundation throwing it together. Interestingly, the Symbian Exposition is this week in Amsterdam, so we suspect we'll be hearing a lot more about this over the next few days. Is it just us, or is Mr. Elop making his presence felt very, very quickly? For what it's worth, the Foundation is explaining that a board meeting held just today played a big role in this decision and sudden announcement -- though there was a call for media, we received notice of it just minutes before the event. Follow the break for both Symbian's and Nokia's press releases.Continue reading Nokia taking over Symbian development, Foundation responsible for licensingNokia taking over Symbian development, Foundation responsible for licensing originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 08 Nov 2010 10:35:00 EDT. Google Chrome for Mac getting confirm to quit option

Those of you who use Google Chrome on a Mac will soon have a handy option added to your browser of choice. It's called 'confirm to quit', and it does exactly what you'd expect. Upon activating the confirmation, Chrome will display a prompt if you press Command+Q -- which you'll then need to hold for another second and a half to actually quit. It's handy for those times when you meant to tap Command+W to close only your current window, but missed. Should you quit via the menu bar, the prompt will not appear.

Revision 64920 marks the feature's arrival in the Chromium for Mac builds, and users who want to give it a go can enable confirm to quit on the about:flags page. In case the warning Chrome provides isn't enough, remember: about:flags can crash your browser, warp your LPs, and cause premature baldness.

Here's hoping the feature makes its way to Chrome on other operating systems as well. Anyone who's ever gotten a bit trigger happy while closing tabs and accidentally shut their whole browser down would probably welcome a confirm to close option.Google Chrome for Mac getting confirm to quit option originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 03 Nov 2010 21:00:00 EST. Crux 360 case converts your iPad into a netbook for $149 (video)

Hello, trend. The Crux 360 is the third such device that we've seen in the past two months, and if we had to guess, we'd say it probably won't be the last. That said, it's easily the best looking of the bunch, and it's available to pre-order beginning today. For all intents and purposes, this case transforms your iPad into a netbook (at least, a netbook sans a bona fide operating system), but it's also capable of flipping back in order to become a kickstand. A Bluetooth keyboard is built right into the "lid," and if you're in need of little visual explanation, a video is waiting just after the break. $149 and she's yours... someday.Continue reading Crux 360 case converts your iPad into a netbook for $149 (video)Crux 360 case converts your iPad into a netbook for $149 (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 05 Nov 2010 13:39:00 EDT. Google Instant for Mobile goes live on Android and iPhone (video)

We'd heard Google Instant was quietly popping up in mobile form for a lucky few, but it's officially widespread now -- the query-while-you-type search technology's just hit open beta on Android 2.2 and iOS 4. Just go to Google in your favorite mobile browser and press the "Turn on" link, and you'll be able to rush into the arms of your favorite technology blog with four fewer clicks. We maintain that it's nigh-useless on most standard-sized mobile devices, as you can only ever see the top result without scrolling up and down, but it won't cost you a penny to pick up your handset and form an opinion for yourself. Chrome Toolbox adds quick launch hotkeys, tab tweaks, and more to Google Chrome

When you make the switch to Google Chrome from another browser, most keyboard shortcuts will probably be familiar (Ctrl+T for a new tab, for example). However, there are some minor differences between Chrome and other browsers that might fluster newly converted Chrome enthusiasts.
Chrome Toolbox is an add-on by Google that not only helps out with comparing (and learning) hotkeys, but adds a ton of other functionality as well. Here's a brief rundown of what it does:

Floating image toolbar: Hover over an image, and get a floating toolbar letting you magnify it, view the original image, or set it as wallpaper. There's a floating toolbar for videos, too.
Tab tweaks: Override Chrome's default to close the window when closing the last tab (so the window stays open). You can also double-click a tab to close it, and open links in new tabs.
Form data: Save form fields so you don't have to refill them if the browser crashes. It doesn't auto-save though.
Quick launch: Use Alt-1 thru Alt-9 to open all links from any given folder in the Bookmark Manager. Not just one link - a whole folder, each in its own tab. You can also redefine those hotkeys.
Shortcut helper: This is the feature I started with. It lets you see a complete map of all Chrome keyboard shortcuts, compare them with a bunch of other browsers, and even add them to the extensions drop-down menu.
Mute all tabs: That's an option in the add-on's drop-down menu, and I think all browsers should have it. You don't always know which tab all the noise is coming from, so now you can mute them all in one fell swoop.

There are more features (a boss key, for example), but if any of this sounds vaguely interesting - don't hesitate, just go ahead and install it! It's a great first extension for new Google Chrome users.Chrome Toolbox adds quick launch hotkeys, tab tweaks, and more to Google Chrome originally appeared on Download Squad on Wed, 03 Nov 2010 16:00:00 EST. Google Chrome Web Store delayed, may not launch until December

Back in mid-October, I mused that the Chrome Web Store might be getting ready to open its doors, but according to MediaMemo's Peter Kafka the launch isn't going to happen any time soon.

Based on his discussions with developers who are building Web apps for Chrome, prevailing sentiment is that the Chrome Web Store will now open some time in early December. While some devs remain optimistic that a mid-November launch could still happen, Google has already missed launch targets -- casting severe doubts.

Interestingly, Kafka also mentions that some developers report receiving monetary "encouragement" directly from Google -- one individual acknowledged receive a $15,000 check. The Chrome Web Store remains enough of an enigma that these delays won't adversely affect it -- but we'd sure like to get a look at it.

Here's hoping the beta launch happens before the year is out.Google Chrome Web Store delayed, may not launch until December originally appeared on Download Squad on Thu, 28 Oct 2010 11:30:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.Read | Permalink | Email this | Commentswindows iphone phone

Thanko's Laptop Table Bag stores your laptop, hides a table, saves your lap

We've all ready the scary reports of what happens when a laptop makes your lap top a little too toasty. The solution? Buying a desk, obviously, and now Thanko has one that you can take with you. It's called the Laptop Table Bag and it looks like a surprisingly normal, if decidedly corporate-issue, laptop bag. But, out of the bottom pivots four legs to hold your mobile device at what may or may not be a comfortable height. The 5980 yen ($75) contraption weighs about six pounds empty, making it a poor companion for your ultralight, but if your machine is more of a luggable -- or if your manservant does the carrying for you -- you may not even notice the extra heft.

Philips Pronto lineup of universal remote controllers to be discontinued

If you're a home theater or home automation buff then you're certainly familiar with Philips' Pronto lineup of remote controls. Unfortunately, Philips has decided to discontinue its Pronto business after failing to find a buyer. Here's the official quote:
"In December 2009, Philips announced the intention to relocate some of its existing remote control activities in Leuven, Belgium to Asia. At the same time, the intention was communicated to investigate alternative strategic options for the Pronto business, as this activity no longer fits with the Philips strategy. Following thorough research, no suitable partner was found for the acquisition of these activities. As such, Philips confirms today that it will discontinue the Pronto product line and related activities."

Droid 2 Global appears in Costco database for $199, T-Mobile Comet at $149

What happens when you punch the phrase "Droid" into a Costco sales terminal? If Boy Genius Report's sources are right, you see the Motorola Droid 2 Global ring up (in black and white!) for $199.99. Considering we're also seeing the 1.2GHz quad-band worldphone on a Verizon rebate sheet, it's a pretty safe bet the handset's coming out soon -- and if Verizon also lists the phone for that price, it could be the death knell for the A955. (We've gotten several tips today that the original Droid 2 has been marked for end-of-life at Best Buy.) There's also a T-Mobile Comet pictured above, also known as the Huawei Ideos, a low-budget Android smartphone whose $149.99 price will almost certainly be free of two-year contracts. Of course, in the spirit of Costco you probably won't get off that easily -- subliminal messaging will surely compel you to purchase the $24.99 Ewoks and Star Wars Droids Adventure Hour on DVD.Droid 2 Global appears in Costco database for $199, T-Mobile Comet at $149 originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 30 Oct 2010 17:34:00 EDT.
